I met Josh Fattal as a fellow student on the International Honors Program (IHP), Global Ecology program in 2002. During 9 months we circled the globe, traveling to India, the Philippines, New Zealand, and Mexico, with 28 other students and three professors, studying local ecologies and cultures and through all that time, Josh was consistently open-minded and open-hearted. He was reading the collective works of Mohandas Gandhi at the time and intentionally worked to absorb those ideas into his entire life. This photo shows Josh and a number of our classmates carrying a log to a traditional Maori carving ceremony in New Zealand. On a literal level it speaks to his wide ranging experiences and interest in reaching out to other cultures. For me, though it also represents Josh's drive to engage with the people around him and connect with them. Since IHP we have been disconnected by geography but I've been consistently inspired from afar by his experiences and ideas. Josh is both joyful and serious, idealistic and clear-sighted. I count him among the best people I know and love and miss him unreservedly.
