Josh’s undergraduate experiences brought him up and down the West Coast of the United States and across the world. He began his studies at the University of California Santa Barbara and completed them at UC Berkeley. In the middle he was a student and teaching assistant with UC Santa Cruz’s Sierra Institute a semester spent in the backcountry of California and Oregon. For his junior year Josh studied abroad for two semesters with the International Honors Program’s “Global Ecology" program that brought him to the UK, India, the Philippines, New Zealand and Mexico.

After graduating Josh spent a few months in the Bay Area before becoming involved with the Aprovecho Research Center in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Once Josh got to “Apro” he dove into the community and its sustainable living project with every bit of his being.

A year of travel and exploration begun as Josh set off to be a Teaching Assistant on the International Honors’ Program’s “Health and Community” semester. Josh was the intermediary between thirty-three students, three professors and country coordinators in Switzerland, India, China and South Africa. After his travels he spent time with his father who was on a business trip in Germany and traveled in Europe with his brother who was conducting research in Sweden. Josh left Europe to meet his college friends Shane Bauer and Sarah Shourd who were living in Damascus, Syria. Shortly after arriving in Damascus Josh, Shane and Sarah went for a brief hiking trip to Iraqi Kurdistan, which has led to the current situation.
